The Hubris of Ego...

Those whom the Gods would destroy...they first make mad...with power..."
Euripides

I'm a story teller at heart, so I tell stories to illustrate a point...

My best friend up here in P-Town was a stand-out D-lineman in college for a small school...all-everything, but went undrafted...got an invite to the Raiders camp...and blew everyone up...the Raiders first round pick that year was a highly rated All American D-Lineman at the same position...who my Boi clearly outplayed in training camp...everyone said so...the D-line coach...O line coach...D coach...and the head coach...yet he was one of the last players cut...all four of those coaches told him it wasn't their call...the GM and owner had sunk a ton of money into top draft picks and free agent signings over the last few years on the D line...and they weren't going to admit making mistakes...they got him on a team in Europe, and told him to kick ass...keep ready...they were going to work at bringing him back when they could...

He was all everything in Europe...on his way back to the bigs when he blew out his shoulder, pec, and elbow...and had to retire...

I have heard some on this blog, and other places, say that executives don't make decisions that impact their company, team, etc, based on personal feelings...and I laugh...

I saw top brass on the job and DAs make decisions about criminal cases based solely on personal feelings...I saw, as a bodyguard, top level executives, politians, and VIPs make decisions that could, and did cost their companies millions of dollars...based solely on personal feelings...

Is it possible for a coach...a GM...or an owner...to sabotage their own team to prove a point? Are their egos that big...and fragile?

Yeah...but as my dear old Granny always used to tell me...

"Money talks...and BS walks...and your shoes are lookin' mighty worn, boy..."

So...who am I...and what do I know?

No one...and nothing...

Money, trumped only by ego, and usually in conjunction with money, will always trump common sense, evidence and truth while people choose to live in spiritual and personal atrophy.
