Lost: Jacob have I loved...

ROMANS Chapter 9

1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.
3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:
7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.
10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;
11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.
32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

The name Jacob means "heel catcher"...the meaning is of one who cheats...one who is willing to do anything to win. His name is later changed to Israel...he who wrestles with God.

Is the island the lone "constant"...jumping not only between time in one universe, but between all of the possible universes? Course correcting to make sure that each universe stays incorruptable? To make certain that no one can cross from one to the other? Is Richard immortal because he was chosen to maintain this island on it's journey?

Why is each leader chosen at an early age? Why is Richard not the leader, but only a caretaker? Is Jacob the title of the one leader? Or, is Jacob a title given to each new leader?

Is Daniel trying to find a time when he can protect Charlotte? Or, is he trying to find a universe where she doesn't die?

Is Aaron the Little Prince? His name means the high, or exalted mountain...is he the new leader? Or is the little Prince referring to Locke?

Did Ben know that Widmore had broken the "rules" because he had already been to a future where his daughter was alive?

Was Widmore one of the original crew of "The Black Rock"?

What is the difference between free will...and predestination?

There's a few questions...let's hear some answers...oh, by the way...

It was very cool to see Jin...glad they kept him in the story...great actor...great character.

Coming off that awesome Laker victory, I feel like tackling this post... keeping in mind, i am no expert just a guesser!
First, If Jacob is loved, who is Esau the hated? Widmore?
Next... my thought on the island being it's own constant.. I don't think so. I think the island is jumping as a side effect to Ben turning the big wheel and jumping back to the real world. Before the sub was needed to travel back and forth.
Richard, hmm.... my guess is he is not aging because he was one of the last (perhaps even the only) person to be conceived and birthed on the island. This would explain why the others had a need for Juliette to come and work on the issue. Babies conceived and born on the island have eternal (or something close) life. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the previous woman who died during childbirth on the island not to just leave the island via sub if there were not a huge benefit to having the baby there.
As per why is the leader chosen at a young age? Not sure, but using the biblical reference, that is how things were usually done in biblical times as well. It would appear from the choosing of Ben and Locke that the leader can not be a native of the island... If Aaron is the future leader (little price) than it would appear the rule would be not conceived and born on the island... This would also answer why Richard is not eligable for the role...
I assume Ben knew the rules had been broken because he knew in the future Alex was alive and well. Widmore's man killing her changed the course thereby breaking the rules.
Based on Widmore's appearance as a young idiot in the fifties, I would assume he was not part of the Black Rock crew. Only because you would hope if anyone had been around that long they would have acted with more wisdom than Widmore did.
The difference between free will and predestination??? Holy cow, how would I know... or even guess? :)
I also question... Last season Charlotte referred to the island as her birth place. If so, she could not have been there long. Following Daniel's thought on the nose bleeds coming to those who have been on the island the shortest amount of time. The oceanic folks have been there, what? less than 4 months? I also was wagering on Miles being the son of the Dharma scientist/video narrator guy... he also would have been on the island for a lesser amount of time than the oceanic folks as he has a nosebleed issue now.
Oh yeah.. I hope Daniel isn't really in love with Charlotte, as I love his character and dislike hers. Hope it's more that Charlotte is a key to the equation of getting the island back on course through her scientific work or simply because she is someones mother or child. This theory would work if Daniel was truly in love with the woman in England who is comatose when not traveling through time... waking up as a 3 year old, or speaking with her father whose been deceased 5 years. I'd like to see more on her story!!!
Finally (I think) what does Desmond have to do with it all???? He is 'special' somehow.... anyone have a guess as to how or why? It seems to be leading to him having to take the oceanic six back... but why him?
Finally (really this time) I too am so glad to see Jin back!!! I love his character and though I knew he would be back, I was concerned it would be in flashbacks only... now we have a living, breathing, Jin!
I think that's all! But I may be back! Sorry if it's incoherent... wanted to stay with the LOST theme though!

Daniel's take on the nosebleeds is, I believe, the opposite...the longer you've been there, the more exposure...so...

Charlotte=longest in group, then Miles, then juliette, and so on...
